    They began under the name Feedback in the mount temple school in Dublin in 1976. Then they changed it in 1978 in The Hype. They had 5 members. Then Dik Evans left, and they changed it to U2, after the American spyplane that was shot down over Russia.
    Thats what wikipedia says anyway...

    Bono explained once that U2 grew out of thoughts of interactivity with the audience..as in 'you too.'

    The references to U2 getting their name from "you too" or an immigration form are complete hogwash. The band got their name from the American (NOT GERMAN) U-2 Spy plane. It was the spy plane USAF pilot Gary Powers was flying when he was shot down over the USSR in 1960. As an Irish immigrant to the USA, I can tell you that there is no special form given to Irish immigrants. All aliens fill out the same form and there is no U2 form

    Earlier they used to call themselves Feedback but one day when the Edge's brother left the band backstage, they had to change the name. Their manager(I don't know if Paul McGuiness was at that time) gave them a list of names to choose from and according to the band, U2 was the name they disliked the least.
