Get a box of tampons, and start practicing now. It can take a while to get used to inserting them. Once it's in, you're not really supposed to feel it. If you do feel it, and it hurts or just doesn't feel right, take it out and try again with a new one. Sometimes they can get tilted, or not in far enough. I'd suggest a junior/regular/slender type to start with. Some have applicators, some don't. If you want to try both, that's not a bad idea. If you get one with an applicator, try one with a plastic applicator first. The cardboard ones can be kinda dry, and can stick to your skin. Ok, if I haven't scared you by now - read this. Very helpful. Good luck! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tampon

I agree with neenie2, go with plastic. And I agree with the slender--there's one called slender-regular I guess but it's cardboard. HOW TO: --------- a) Some people prefer seated on the toilet and reaching around and under while some prefer to stand (or need to for accommodations for disability). b) Sitting or standing are fine, but seated you may be more "tilted" in the right position. I prefer seated because it's easier to relax. The last thing you want to have to worry about is doing "squats" while you try to land the torpedo! (ha) c) Just put the applicator between the thumb and fourth finger, holding on to the "ring" at the base. d) Insert the applicator up to the "ring". Don't worry that you'll directionally go to far up or down, it usually guides itself well. e) If you are uncertain--just aim up and back. f) Then, use your middle finger to push the plunger to insert the tampon. g) Voila! It should be in there! h) Stand up and see if you feel something. If you don't --super! i) If you do feel it--it will be terribly obvious like 'uh oh how the heck do women wear this all day?!' --of that means you got a size TOO BIG. (i.e. super or regular) j) remove the tampon by grasping the string between your thumb and middle or fourth finger, and pull directly down. voila!
