  • Wires and cables expand in heat and contract with cold. When you drive along a road on a summer day, look at the cables strung on the telephone poles. You'll see that they droop quite a bit. On a cold day, they'll be straight across, because the contracted cables are shorter. Of course, utility companies compensate for this with loops of wire on a special frame that let out some "slack". Otherwise the tension would be great enough to break the cables. Still, cold lines are under more tension, and their cases tend to be more brittle. Therefore, any weak points are more likely to break and cause problems in the wintertime.
