My fridge has a filter in the water line. If yours does, it may need to be changed. I have had well-water half my life, and I have had that problem several times. I don't know what causes it, but well water seems to do it more often than regular water.

I would suspect your water from the well is getting more sulfurous. As the water levels go up or down the smell or tastes can get worse. Ours in CA. used to get bad towards the end of summer when the well was very low. SO you could need a new filter. Or it could be the filter in your fridge. My SIL has a button on her fridge water that you press to activate the filter more or less and also has to change it about every 2-3 years.

Have you checked to see if there is stagnant water in the overflow, just below the spout? This could be where you’re smelling sour or rotten water. The other thing could be that you need to change your water filter on the refrigerator. Hope this helps.
