I refuse to buy dogs period and I would certainly not go to a pet store. I do know where they come from since my current babies were rescued from a puppy mill. Sick. They had yeast infections in their ears, no shots, matted fur, intestinal parasites, and they were both skin and bones. It breaks my heart to think of what they went through. The one was so terrified of people that he lost control of his bladder and bowels if anyone got within a few feet of him. The other one would roll over and try to defend himself by peeing on the approaching person. We have had to work very hard to earn the trust of these pups, but it was worth it. They are happy, healthy, and they love their people :)

Buying from a pet store perpetuates puppy mills. Reputable breeders don't sell through pet stores (opinion, but I feel comfortable saying this). Adoption is the best way! Even animal shelters may have pure-bred dogs, if that's what you want, or go to a breed-specific rescue site. I'm a mutt fan, myself. They tend to be healthier, live longer, and be more versatile in their interests. If you do decide to buy from a pet shop (and those pups need "rescuing," too!), make sure the deal includes reimbursed veterinary care for any pre-existing conditions. Good luck with that!

I made this mistake only once. Most all puppies in pet stores (yes, even reputable ones!) come from puppy mills from across the country. My little fella was shipped in a container with thousands of other pups from Kansas to South Carolina. He was terrified of motor noises or thunder and was very shy and insecure. He had multiple health problems all of his very short life including skin problems, nervousness, obsessive behaviors, and hair loss. Since losing him, I have only had one dog from a home breeder where I could see the puppies' parents on-site.

I personally do not agree, but someone has to buy the poor things, I just hate people who would even consider SELLING to pet stores. In England our governing bodies ban us from selling kittens to pet shops, only un-registered breeders do this. So sad.
