She was the greatest cook ever! She had 5 sons, and when we all got together, Aunts, Uncles, and cousins at Christmas and Fourth of July it was heaven on earth.

My gramma was German and a great, great cook. She was a servant to wealthy people from the age of 17 or younger. Both her parents had immigrated from Germany. I have her old cookbook where every recipe is written by hand and the name of the person providing the recipe is written below it.

My Grandma couldn't cook rice, but HER mom, omg... I loved eating at her house. She knew how to make EVERYthing anyone wanted. We always went to her place for holidays. Even if we slipped over for an impromptu visit, she had something yummy waiting for us. And that sweet tea... Now I'm hungry...

I learnt everything I know about food from my granny. I was always over at hers and she was always in the kitchen. She grew her own herbs and vegetables and I would help her in her garden. She would tell me to smell and taste different herbs and spices. She was always pickling, making chutneys etc. Everything was from scratch - no shortcuts. Everything she cooked was out of this world. I have many fond memories helping her to prepare great feasts for the family. Nothing was too much trouble for her. She taught me to respect food, to think about where it came from, etc and she passed on her "secret" ingredient to me...........
