The name soap opera stems from the original dramatic serials broadcast on radio that had soap manufacturers such as Procter and Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive and Lever Brothers as the show's sponsors. These early radio serials were broadcast in weekday daytime slots when mostly housewives would be available to listen; thus the shows were aimed at and consumed by a predominantly female audience. Because actual operas are songs written around some of the most ridiculous, implausible, and contrived plots anyone has ever heard of. Soap operas are basically the same, minus the songs and plus a little sex and violence.

well, i heard it's been called soap opera simply because these dramas were catered to the housewives and laundry maids who were usually left in their homes during daytime when these dramas were aired i.e. literally, listening to the radio dramas while doing their household chores such as laundry. hence, soap opera.
