  • Be flexible, but not a push-over. I managed a retail store a while back and was looking for a cashier. A young girl (19) applied and had a great personality. She was upfront and honest and said that on Mondays, Tuesday's and Wednesday's she'd be approximately 10 minutes late because she had to walk her 4 year old son to day care which was about 8 blocks away, and she didn't have a car. I hired her anyway and she turned out to be the best cashier ever. She was always ready to work at never showed up later than 9:10 (the store opened at 9). Even after I left she stayed on and started the management training program. My boss (the regional manager) was upset that she always clocked in late those three days but she gave 110%, never had money missing, always stayed busy stocking while the registers were slow, never asked for a day off, came back from breaks on time and followed all store rules and regulations to perfection. In being flexible, a single mom got a great career and I had a reliable and dedicated employee.
