Shalom! :) Its a huge decision to convert to any religion - so this very question means that you are almost there. Welcome to the Jewish community! :) There are a few different sects of Judaism from Reform to Orthodox, I recommend that you contact a Rabbi at your nearest synagogue and ask for more information, he/(she if you wish to convert to reform Judaism) will guide you through the steps. Here is a list of synagogue authorities in the UK: http://tinyurl.com/ylkqck To contact the United Synagogue their telephone number is: 020 8343 8989 To contact the Reform Synagogue their telephone number is: 020 8349 5640 ----- I will give you this history so that in the eventuality that someone turns you away, you understand what is going on: The United Reform website states "Centuries ago Jews did engage in missionary activities. This was particularly true during the Greco-Roman period of Jewish history when thousands of non-Jews living in Asia Minor embraced Judaism. The destruction of the Roman Empire and mortal threats against Jews who sought converts marked the end of formal organized efforts to missionize." This is quite relaxed language. In Roman times any Rabbi who converted someone to Judaism, along with the convert, would be executed. As a result the Jewish people tend to be reclusive. (Here is an e-book which covers Judaism and anti-Semitism in Roman times: http://tinyurl.com/ylhk27) There is now a practise amongst some Rabbis to turn someone away up to 3 times so that they know that you have thought about converting and you are serious about your decision. I am quite certain that the Rabbi you speak to will probably warn you about the bad things (anti-Semitism) so that you are joining the Jewish people with your eyes open. ----- Here are some links about converting to Judaism... Yum! Its a great experience and I recommended it. Best wishes, and Happy Chanukah! :)
