Why is a brown cow not purple?

Not that it is much relevence now that they are domesticated and looked after but brown hair meant that they blended in better with the muddy fields that they so often roam around in. Camouflage, not many fields are purple.

Maybe it is. How would we be able to tell if a brown cow was purple, surely the brown would just get in the way?
