What's the purpose of even having the old testament in the christian bible if so many things don't apply in christianity because of the new testament?

The Old Testament proves that Jesus is the savior we were waiting for especially in the later chapters which Jews conveniently ignore. Also the Old Testament is not just stories there is sound judgment and advice in there that ties in with the New Testament. I challenge you to read Genesis and then Revelations and you will be amazed. Also you cannot get by with out proverbs and psalms. All the rules and laws in the first 5 chapters of the Bible show you how they were required to live in order to even come close to God's standards. Even all of them combined were not enough, Thus Jesus.

The answer to your question is simply, it would not be there if it was not needed. The old testiament is a typeology of the new testament...The old was types and shadows of the new. The old was the law and the new is the law revealed through Jesus Christ..

prophesies of Old that are Fulfilled in New... God's dealing with the Jews, until HE opened it up to all in New... Old is the BEGINNING, New is the ENDING... the Old is to study and learn from..the New is to live by... We can't have the Ending without the Beginning... the Old tells us alot about God's mercy, grace, and love...all he wanted from the Israelites all those years was Faith and Obediance ..but they always rebelled...so HE opened it up to ALL through Jesus Christ...so now we all have hope of eternal life, now just the UNChosen, so to speak... all the LAWS God gave Moses to lead them with...they still worshipped idols and more... we are not under those laws anymore,that was the Old Covenant with the Israelites that did not work. Jesus is the New Covenant, HE showed us "the Way"...

Even though the Old Testament ceremonial laws and civil laws don't apply anymore, it still is important. The Old Testament tells us the story of God's promise to send a Savior with the nation he was to come from and prophecies about what he was going to do. In a way you are wrong in saying that many things don't apply. All things apply even the things we don't do anymore because they were all centered around the coming Christ.

The 10 Commandments will never change....OT is the Beginning, Jesus is told of in Genesis 3, the seed or offspring, you have to have all prophesies of Old T. of the Messiah...we should study and learn of and from God's dealings with HIS Chosen....Obediance...Revelation is the end...Fullfillment...the Alpha and the Omega...GOD
