  • "Centennial" by James Michener. Like most of Michener's books, the "land" is the main character of the story. The people in the story lead fragile lives susceptible toconflicts, diseases, injuries, temptation, greed, and a myriad of problems. Some of these problems are settled satisfactorily while others spell the doom for many of the leading characters.

  • Pardon me for answering my own question but I have recently read "the girl in the picture" by Dianne Chung. It is a fascinating and inspiring biography of the girl photographed during the Viet Nam war after a napalm attack. I highly recommend it!

Grief of my Heart, Dr. Khassan Baiev. Everything is Illuminated, Jonathan Safran Foer. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, Dave Eggers. These have all touched me in powerful ways.
