There is such a long list that I don't know which one I'd pick, but I think the first thing I would do is to try to secretly find the mortgage for several friends who helped me when I was at my lowest ebb, who are struggling financially themselves, and pay them off. I wouldn't want them to know where it had come from, if I could prevent it, as I wouldn't want them to feel beholdened or funny around me. I would just want them to get the pink slip and the release of the lien and know that someone loved them enough to help.
Our church has been helping to finish, staff and stock a hospital in Africa. I know the building is complete, but I think they still need medicines and more doctors. I'd want to take care of that.
After that, the need in the world is so great that even a billionaire couldn't possible touch it. You could spend all of the money very easily and not make the smallest dent. So I would want to pick a project that would double, like King's chessboard, and pour everything into it that I could. One idea might be to fund the education of as many doctors, teachers, pastors and missionaries as I could, who would be willing to go into a particular place and train more doctors, teachers, pastors and missionaries. Maybe send as many as I could to Rwanda, with the idea that they would train people to go out into the neighboring countries and teach people there to go even further out. Or do the same thing in Haiti, or Mexico or someplace. The idea being that even a billionaire can't touch all the suffering in those regions, but if a billionaire funds a hundred people who go fund another hundred people and so on, maybe eventually there would be enough to put an end to the suffering.
