Leave well enough alone..the old rhymes come from a saner, safer time..they are comforting..anything written now would be ugly, dangerous and/or hurtful..why make children grow up sooner than they have to? That would be most unkind, I think! :(

It's because thos types of things are so old and traditional they can't just be re-written. They can eveolve over many years, butthey are too treasured to be replaced. :)

nursery rhymes were used to teach children in a society that is illiterate and therefore make the written word useless. To convey knowledge or culture in a manner that is easy to remember rhymes were developed. In a modern society that has written words to transmit knowledge these older forms of transmission have started to fade away. The older ones remain as cute stories to put our children to bed.

I suppose it's that to make them current and relevant would also be to render them PG-13. Cautionary tale subject matter just ain't what it used to be. Humpty Dumpty had sex unprotected Humpty Dumpty got his p.p. infected All the good doctors And all the good drugs Couldn't cure Humpty of his S.T.D. bugs. See what I mean??

Maybe its because the world today would consist of nursery rhymes depicting world poverty, hunger and dismay. Or, maybe its because you can't improve perfection. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. Being a poetry writer myself though, this came to mind immediately; Jack and Jill went up the hill To buy some pills and weed The dealer said "Try this, its great!" And it was a good high, indeed!
