  • Either or neither can be pathetic. I've heard awful attempts of American accents by Brits and vice versa. I've also heard excellent interpretations by both. So I guess it just depends on the speaker. :)
  • Neither are pathetic, its what people do to understand difference.
  • g'day Tespot, Thank you for your question. It depends on the quality of the attempts. ?Merryl Streep isn't pathetic for example. Regards
  • Both sound horrible to my ears.. think Madonna's "british accent" I prefer it when people stick to the accent their born with it makes them more unique!
  • Neither is pathetic. If I lived in Britain, I would have fun trying to adopt the accent so I would sound British. Points to anyone from Britain who came here and fooled me in the same way.
  • I love accents and dialects, so I always enjoy "bad" attempts as well. The only time I heard the "trying to be American" was Daphne on Frasier saying "Sure." like a Texan and it was very cute!
  • Not when they're done well..and I have heard both done well. Want to know pathetic? Jessica Simpson's attempt at a Southern accent.
  • I'm gonna call that one a tie.
  • In my opinion both are as equally pathetic or annoying. I see in people who do that some kind of low self esteem. They want to be something they are not, like a kid imitating something they watch on TV.
  • Neither is pathetic, but both are like nails on a chalkboard as far as I am concerned.
  • I think it varies according to the talent of the person making the attempt. Examples: British to American: Hugh Laurie is Excellent! Aussie to American: Rachel Griffiths is Excellent! In both cases, I was shocked to hear their true accents in interviews. American to British: Meryl Streep does a great job. American to British: Madonna doesn't cut it. American to British: Leonardo DiCaprio butchered it. These are all solely my personal opinions, of course. I must add that I have a crush on that hottie, Hugh Laurie. Yum!
  • both are very lame ...BUT the very worst is Yank or a Pom trying to do an Aussie accent its soooooo bad
  • It partly depends on the intent. If Madonna is doing it to be a showoff (and I suspect she is) it comes off wrong. Plus she's just bad at it. But sometimes if one is somewhere where he or she is immersed in a different accent, a person might begin to unintentionally pick up some of its aspects. When I was in Australia, after three days I had to consciously speak in my native accent or else I'd slip into a bit of Aussie. Hugh Laurie and Jamie Bamber have perfect American accents; I often forget they're from the UK.
  • Both sound ridiculous if you do not speak that way.
  • I believe both are pathetic they should each stick to their own. Regards.
  • Generally the Americans doing British accents tend to be pretty bad (obviously there are exceptions.) Brits that i've heard can pull off an American accent alright, especially if their own accent isn't too strong, although, again, there are exceptions.
