Because people that criticise, have faults also, but don't like that fact. They criticise other people, to make *themselves* feel that they're 'better' than others. Which they're not.

I imagine that people that criticize others, subconsciously elevate themselves by finding fault in others because they lack self esteem.

One of the reasons could be because they have been criticized so much in their own life they desperately seek normalcy. Like saying misery loves company and when you can't find the company you soon will create it.

For overly critical people, who criticize all the time: 1. they were criticized as a child 2. they are insecure 3. they are negative, "glass is half-empty" types 4. they need to make you feel small so they look "big" 5. they believe you are a reflection of them and must improve you so they look better (wife, husband, mother, father, etc.) 6. They are perfectionists Otherwise, sometimes people criticize because they think they are helping you with something that you don't see or understand about yourself or a situation.
