  • That died with Concorde. The only supersonic aircraft flying today are military, and 99% of those are one or two-man fighters.
  • No one cares to get from one dump to another very fast.
  • Currently, the only aircraft capable of supersonic speeds are used exclusively by the military. After the demise of Aerospatiale-British Aerospace Concorde, there were no other supersonic passenger transports. It is against the law to attain supersonic speed over certain areas of land due to the deafening sonic boom noise that follows. I want to briefly discuss supersonic capabilities of our current commercial jets. The problem is that a shockwave builds along the wings, causing a decrease in lift and a need for more speed. If this occurs at a high enough altitude, you could be theoretically going too slow and too fast at the same time. I am going to avoid further explanation here, its for a different question. I will leave it at the fact that with a large commercial jet you run into a lot of problems if you attempt supersonic travel. Commercial jet engines DO have some thrust limiting systems. They are mostly found in the forms warning lights when target values are exceeded. Autopilot systems also regulate thrust. However, you can give a plane as much as full power at any time if you disarm the involved systems. In conclusion, I really don't see plans for any supersonic airliners in the future. The cost and problems that arise with such are not those that are really being dealt with at this time in commercial aviation research.
