It's the static electricity....from the dryness in the air! You probably have the heat on in your home cause it is cold outside. Have you ever rubbed a balloon on your head and you begin to pull it away and your hair stands on end? It is the same thing. I do it to my dog too...I feel sorry for him cause he looks at me like I meant to do it!

You aren't zapping the pet's fur, you're zapping the pet's skin through the not-very-resistant fur layer. Once you build up a sizable charge of static electricity, the pet's fur becomes quite inadequate to block the spark. Here's a handy hint for avoiding zapping your pets when you pet them in very dry air: form a complete "circuit" between you and your pet. Say you've decided to pet your cat's head. Normally your body gains a lot of static electricity from petting your cat. To avoid constantly zapping her head, place your other hand on your cat's rear end. Since the connection formed by your other hand is wide and thus has very low resistance, the static electricity you gain by petting her head will pass through you and back into your cat's fur without causing a painful static shock to either of you.
