Knowing mankind as a whole, we've probably not bothered to remember them.

There is none. I consider there to be a large group of people who hold an equal first position on this point ; ) Generally anyone who has made a discovery, etc that lead to a massive increase in the well-being of humanity. So people like the discoverer of antibiotics, the inventor of the wheel (though there were several inventors across the world, and they are unknown), the people who basically invented digital computers, etc. All great achievements made by great people.
