you might want to check with your individual state for this. It will also depend on what type of business you are planning on having. For example... in the state of illinois, to open up a retail store... you must register a business with the state. If it is sole proprietorship, then your employee id number will probably be your social sec. number. You will then get a small certificate that must be displayed where your customers can see it. But now say you are in the finance field, you will need much more than that. But like I said.. it does depend on the state you live in.
