One part of your question is true: there are no different races, only different human beings that adapted to environmental conditions in specific ways. It is in no way clear that white people stood at the beginning of this development.

Homo erectus came out of Africa. Since nature turns skin dark in order to protect us from the sun, homo erectus was certainly not white, they were black. DNA evidence indicates that homo sapiens, the ancestors of modern humans, came out of Africa about 200,000 years ago. So, no matter what colour your skin now, all our ancestors were black. Wherever on earth they migrated would over many generations dictate the colour of their skin. Different races mixing will also change the skin colour of their children. You can find some sensationally beautiful people where several races mix.

Sure, that's basically "survival of the fittest." Those humans that had adapted in this way were a lot more likely to survive.
