The genetic instructions are in the form a number of long lekical strings of DNA. These strings of DNA are coiled up into structures called chromosomes, which are held in the nucleus of the cell. Humans have 23 chromosomes, each containing one highly coiled double helix. If it were straighened out, each chromosome would be 2 metres (6ft) long - and, of course, one molecule thin.
