Age doesn't play into it as far as I am concerned. I don't care whether you say thanks or thank you..just the acknowledgement is enough.

Being polite is ageless..to receive it or to extend it to others. Whatever words you use, whether thanks or thank you or thank you very much, as long as you are sincere and mean it. :)

"Thank you" is more respectable than a simple "Thanks", especially when used towards elders and others in a respected position. I still think it's good to say "Thanks" to a person younger than yourself. It's just good manners. Young people learn through example, and we adults can show them that. I can extend this further. In some cultures (e.g., Japanese and Chinese), when an older person hands you something, you're supposed to receive it with two hands, not just one hand, as a sign of respect. And if you give something to an older person, you're supposed to give it using both of your hands, not just one hand. Interesting, huh? (I can't see that happening here! :) )

I think that thanks is just as good as thank you. Sometimes you can even say thanks a lot, if you are really appreciative.
