If you want to be understood, yes.

I am not so concerned about proper punctuation and spelling...BUT you have to understand why we have proper punctuation and spelling --and that simply is to make what you say completely understandable. We have to have a norm...If you don't use proper spelling and punctuation you run the risk of not being understood.

Communication in writing is different from casual conversation. You can relax all you want, but if you fail to spell words correctly and apply the rules of good grammar to your writing, people will find reading your answers tedious, even difficult. How hard is it, really, to use a spell checker? The truth is - on Answerbag and in the real world - if you don't care how you present yourself, people won't take you seriously. That's just the way it works.

If you were to 'relax' and casual with your conversational speech the same way people here are often with their punctuation and spelling it would be like you were mumbling and speaking in pig Latin or something. Hopefully you could be understood. That is all people are asking for here, plus some showing of respect by trying to write well. You are saying you respect your audience when you speak or write well and if you want your questions or answers to be respected, you have to treat the other members the same way.

If you sound pretty ghetto, then I don't have much expectations for you to ask or answer questions intelligently, or coherently. Anyone can say goo goo and ga ga, but just because that's fun doesn't make it worth people's attention. When people seriously want a question or answer to be read clearly, it helps to use the language that suits that purpose. No big deal. Have all the fun you want. Relax. Let go. It's okay. We'll still be here when you want something answered seriously.

1) For many people, AB is not leisure, AB is infotainment. 2) In my free time, I usually read books, magazines and other texts which are written in a language that I understand. If those texts were written "with relaxation", I would have to invest much effort to understand them. On AB I just ignore questions where the spelling is so bad that I cannot understand the meaning easily. The only exception would be if those things were extremely interesting and it were not possible to find them in another form.
-
Well I'm not one of those people. But I do agree with you that SOME (not all) people here need to chill out a little bit. This isn't grammar or spelling school, folks. The world isn't perfect, the Internet isn't perfect, AB isn't perfect. Look in the mirror and I'm sure what you see there is imperfect too. However, I must remind you that people would not change just because you said this and that. I suggest you interact with people who really don't care about those stuff.

I don't have a problem with it, but when it is really bad it can be difficult to understand. If I can figure out the person's meaning then I just let it go...it doesn't concern me. There are some cases when it proves EXTREMELY difficult to try and understand what the person is trying to say.

I don't have a problem with it. I know that I type VERY fast & I usually screw up here & there but I don't care. It doesn't bother me when ppl do it either. Unless I can't decipher what they are trying ot say because it is so bad, but oh well.
