True story: In an interview, Charles Manson refered to belonging to Scientology as the CRAZIEST thing he ever did. Enough said.

I definitely wouldn't call it a "true religion" but then again, it's hard to say where the line falls. The fact that it costs money to advance into the higher levels of the church organization is what pushes it into the cult/business category for me.

It isn't even a false religion and certainly not a business other than taking money. However it is a sign of how far people will go to believe in something even something as batshit crazy as scientology.

The "Church of Scientology" is definitely a business. Scientology itself is the ideology. CofS peddles this ideology and the cult is VERY much about the money. It's set up a little like a pyramid scheme. If Amway sold religion, that would be CofS. As far as the ideology/set of beliefs and methods go, I think that for some people, it is their religion, if that's how they look at it. For some, it's more a philosophical choice. Some Scientologists are not members of CofS though CofS will never admit this to you since it doesn't like heretics. If I were going to make a suggestion, I'd say let's rephrase as "Do you recognize the cult/church of Scientology as a business or church?" And my answer to that would be that it's a church that's run like a business and which does not care about its followers.

It's a business. Then again so are most religions/churches. Scientology is a bit more overt than others.

Of course not L. Ron Hubbard invented it as a joke and tax dodge. Later, when he found out how truly gullible people can be, he expanded his "teachings."
