A Community Leader can penalty-box users, delete comments, and have their moderation flags instantly approved. AB staff members can delete accounts and do whatever they want. There is no clear path to becoming a CL. I think that if you're really nice to the staff members and community leaders, they might consider you when they need to appoint more CLs.

CL's can flag items and the flag is immediately approved, and we can 'penatly box' users and also delete comments on the blog and under answers. Our responsibility is to not go around deleting people's stuff because we don't like a user or have a bone to pick. You become one by invitation. I received an email asking me if I would consider it, and I accepted. I was then later emailed to suggest a new CL, but that didn't happen with the most recent appointment. If you are a user who is known to be fair and reasonable then that is your best chance.

The Answerbag Staff are paid employees. They build the site, do all the stuff with all the neat and complicated code, etc. Community Leaders are regular users who volunteer their time to help out a little bit. They're mostly here for spam control. You have to be asked by the AB staff to become a CL. It is NOT a paid position.
