Wow, I've never heard of that. I guess if your parents give consent for you to adopt them... This is quoted from someone else's sanswer from a similar question: "That adoption isn't legal either unless...[they have their]...parental rights taken away."

You can not "adopt" your parent - but you can be named a legal guardian and you can claim them as a dependant on your taxes. Depending on what state you are in, your parent would either have to be declared mentally unfit to care for themselves or make their own legal decisions or unable to care for themselves financially (in which case you must prove you are more than 50% responsible for their financial well-being).
