What monster are we talking about here?

So, at this point we know that Ben has some kind of control over the "monster," at least in summoning it. It emits several sounds, one which I have discovered is a taxi meter counting down. It has information on people and their lives. Maybe Ben equipped it with this information, for the security of the island folk. But it must have something to do with the Dharma initiative because of its location.

When Mr.Eko looked into the monster, he saw flashes from his past. Rousseau called the monster a security system to protect the island. we know that ben has some control in summoning the monster. It makes a cranking noise and sort of howls, like a blaring horn. I have no idea what it could possibly be other than, quite simply, a monster.

I think it's either one or many spirits (djinn). Djinn are described as fireless smoke who like to play with people's minds, and mimic dead people. Sound familiar? (Eko's brother Yemi, 'Flocke', Alex, Rousseau's Team, Christian (and possibly Claire) etc etc.) Basically some sort of spirit that protects the island.

I believe that the black smoke monster is the mysterious man who had been wanting to kill Jacob. That's why it messed with Eko, it was trying to find someone to trick into killing him. I also believe that there is a white smoke monster that IS Jacob. There was a point in the first season where the smoke monster comes at Locke but we only see it from the monster's perspective. Later Locke says "I saw the heart of the island and it was beautiful." He wouldn't say that of the black monster. Ying and Yang.

The smoke monster is the island's defense mechanism that judges a person based on some yet unknown criteria for determining who is worthy and who is not. Intention and remorse seem to be strong factors.
