Why do goldfish so often swim up and down against the front glass of an aquarium? Do they see their own reflections or are they trying to get out?

You may notice they do it more when you are in the room- it's because they can see you and they know that they might get fed! Fish have pretty good eyesight and they soon learn to associate humans and food (my baby goldfish learnt that at 12 days old!) so they are saying 'feed me!!'

most likely they aren't used to being caged... or as the last person said associate food with you... this can be bad for predatory animals who are fed in the wild..
