  • I remember something from GCSE Biology about sleep deprivation. If humans don't get REM sleep, it has a massive negative effect on the immune system + nervous system. Sleep also has some kind of effect upon cognitive functions although the reason for that are not 100% clear... best current hypothesis is that human require sleep to properly accumulate and apply what we learn. Kind of like how Windows needs a reboot after you install software. Anyway point is, that in several Psychological case studies a person would be fine for around 52 hours (excluding basic signs of tiredness)... then reaction time starts dropping rapidly and cognitive ability also drops off. At about 72 hours there would be slow drop in a persons mental state participants would become increasingly aggressive and the metabolic rate drops (not sure about this). I really can't remember what happens after 96 hours.
  • I went without sleep for 5 days... I made myself kinda sick though. I dont recomend doing it! LOL
  • I've heard of people going a week. But usually its someone trying to find out if they can do it. I should note that the lack of sleep for that long leads to serious problems. I saw a video of a person who was experimenting with it and they where litterally crazy at the end. Hallocinations etc.
  • I worked for 45 hours straight, some long distance driving in between. I was nauseated, and motor skills were dizzy, when I fianlly made it to the hotel and crashed. The answer to your question, See link: http://sport.guardian.co.uk/ashes2006-07/story/0,,1957158,00.html The record for sleeplessness - held by 17-year-old American Randy Gardner - is 11 days, a feat achieved only by taking lots of cold showers, going for runs and playing games such as pinball
  • There was a study done where someone was deprived of sleep for 11 days, but at that extreme, the word death seems to crop up in the conversation quite a lot. Apparently, among the many things that go haywire in your body the longer you stay awake, your immune system fails and relatively simple pathogens can become deadly. I have personally gone about 4-5 days with no sleep, and at the end I was hallucinating and developed a strange rash on my skin. ( It went away after I slept) I don't recommend staying awake for long periods of time (more than 48 hours) as it really does knock you around!
  • It's about 9 days after that your brain starts to send confused messages and then you faint
  • i've gone four days. i think your head caves in after that.
  • The average person can go about ten days, give or take.
  • You would undergo unconsciousness well before death.
  • Well, some days I feel like I am reaching that threshhold...5 month old baby.
  • i dont know if i can do this, but i am going to add a follow up question: i was watching a hospital drama (possibly house) where this one girl went 2 weeks without adequete sleep, only by unconcioussly falling asleep for seconds at a time randomly throughout the day. would this actually keep you alive longer, by just getting a few more seconds of sleep?
  • It is not possible to go without sleep until you die. Your body would become unconscious first. The world record for going without sleep is 11 days was set by Tom Wright in Cornwall, England just last month, May 2007.
  • Just Imagine somebody in Iraq Torturing you by keeping you up from 'Sleeping' for say......10 days strait. Talk about scary. Id rather be Dead than to be 'Forced' to stay Awake for a week and a half.
  • I personally went 90 hours but the last ten i couldn't even tell you what my name was.
  • I haven't slept for ten days, because that would be too long.
  • I saw this man on NatGeo who has been awoken for 66 years.. and believe it or not, he hasn't ate anything for 66 years too.. and all he does is meditate....
  • Ive gone 4 with 3 hours sleep, the last few hours I was a wrek, couldnt help falling asleep at the end, couldnt even talk, slept for 18 hours afterward. I did it with 2 buddies, we played D&D all throughout.
  • You can get seriously sick from lack of sleep starting around 5 days and the record was 8 days done on a radio program (He did have the help of drugs to keep him awake, too) but the Guinness book of world records won't accept it because they say it is too dangerous. Scientists say that at around 10-11 days you would be dead. Even not getting enough sleep each night is enough to make you ill later in your life by lowering your immunity.
  • I suffer from insomnia and let me tell you, there are nights where I dont even recognize my own apt. During the day sometimes even the simplest things require repeat explanations. Sleep is wonderful when you can sleep, my brioan wont shut up long enough for me to sleep more than two hours. A body needs at least eight to function properly in the work place or at home. The immune system is the first to take the hit, it drops nad it is much harder to get over being sick. Next the memory goes, it gets harder to remember what happened yesterday much less a week ago.
  • Humans can go without sleep for about 5-6 days. I personally haven't slept for about 8 days which is very long for me. my friend hasnt slept for about 136 hours it was so much fun. we stayed up and played games and we talked on the phone this was not hard. then me and another friend stayed up for 46 hours on black friday this was so much fun and we did this 3 years in a row this was really really easy. Me and my friend Jessica who lives in Idaho which is really far away. We talked on the phone for 75 hours. It was so fun! We also played games that we made up over the phone. I go and visit he every year. Now we see each other all the time cause she moved down here in Texas. So its a lot of fun.
  • i went 3 days, and was washing dishes-fell asleep(standing up) and broke my arm on the fall! not pretty
  • I think sum people r stupid i went 6 1/2 days with no sleep and i felt amazin the whole time i didnt have any drugs or nothin so... i win and after i slept for 10hrs and didnt feel sick durrin all of this my mental state was fine and so was my vison
  • Hello my name is mollie i am 12 years old and i have stade up all nite without a nap how ca you all stay up the following day after staing up all nite?i had a nap the nxt day for 3 hours my mum says its becos my bodys younger and i get tierd esier is it true? tell me someone
  • I have stayed up for 12 days before without sleep but after that i was sick like a dog. Anyways for future people that wanna try this dont cause all you are gunna do is make yourself get sick. The humun body needs sleep to have energy for the next day so dont even bother trying it. Plus the human body can last for about 14 days without sleep. My friend has stayed up for 14 days now he is going to the hospital sometime today: April 30 2008
  • I have just read the record is 9 days well ive outdone that every month since i was 17 to 41 i go 19 days a month without any sleep i know i should be dead but im not
  • According to my friend, with the assistance of add drugs, she went 3 weeks.
  • I went 9 days once. On the last day I passed out when I was walking in the hall at school. I don't remember the last 2 or 3 days though. So don't try it.
  • I'm an Architecture student, so it is really common for me to stay awake for 3-4 days and working, and there are rummors in my university that some students have gone crazy from the stress, I personally start feeling sick after 2 days, after 3 I start having memory lapses and hallucinations but thats life, sleep or work. I take 2 cafeine aspirins and a coke, that really makes you wake up (don't try that at home) but I've done a small research about this and many documents I read and some doctors I asked say you can't die from lack of sleep, you will pass out before dying, and your body will fall asleep no matter what after some days (depending on your resistance) so, don't freak out, you won't die of lack of sleep unless of course you go for a walk and you get hit by a bus in your stand by state... anyway, try to sleep at least 6 hours. XOXO.
  • Some good answers here. I don't really know the answer lol, but man I get a weak nauseous tummy after not enough sleep; I've never actually vomited but felt like it.
  • 25 hours.
  • Well I dont think any of this is true, I once stayed awake for 216 hours(9 days) give or take an hour. and I wasnt really tired after that I just had to work the next day so I went to bed. And its common for me to be awake 3 - 4 days. So maybe i'm special And i'm one those people who never seem to get sick. So my answer is I dont know yet, I have been awake for 3 days right now, I will write back in about 5 more.
  • thanks allot guys i just needed to know coz im gonna make the 36 hour mark doing runs and getting fit. im only 16 will 36 hours be ok?
