Amazing Grace is the first that comes to mind.
-
I like "Abide with me" I have heard that at several funerals.
-
"Shall We Gather at the River?", "The Rose", "In the Arms of the Angels". Many more. Not all are in church hymnals.
-
"I Grieve" and "Mercy Street" by Peter Gabriel or DJ Shadow's "Blood on the Motorway". They're sad, but there's a hopeful message within those songs that kind of help you see the light at the end of the darkness.

i dont think any songs in particular can help to grieve... sometimes a song that is not particularly sad can make you think of a departed one... i think of the song "dont worry, be happy" and it makes me smile for them. I know there are songs that make me think of my grandparents and uncle, but it depends on the mood i am in, sometimes i will belt it out happily, other times i will get upset, singing it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gfPtaY9Wc4 anouk one word. I close my eyes And imagine you're here Did it all seem so hopeless Given the chance I would ask Forgive me I didn't do a thing to make you stay I didn't say a word to make you stay If I would have known Could I have tried to make it easier But I didn't do a thing Or say a word One word And I don't know why you're gone, now you're gone No beautiful goodbye You will never leave my mind And it turns out to be so much different than our dreams Now you're, you're a star in heaven
