There a trend, one my parents are very unhappy with =p. Anyway first ill tell you the four major brands. Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, American Eagle, And Aeropostale. That is also the order from most expensive to least. Usually aeropostale items never go over $50 american eagle sometimes goes $100 or so as a max. Hollister Can go 200+ on some items as a max. and finally abercrombie goes 300+ as a max Ill also give you the link to each web site below in case you'd like to browse through there selection. And to answer your initial question its just to follow a trend sure the material is good and the designs are cool but the biggest part is fitting in. 3 reasons 1. you are paying for a lifestyle image. the clothing is cheap, it costs pennies on the dollar to make, but you wear ti and you are saying you a part of a certain lifestyle and club..so you pay more to go around as a walking billboard. 2. The clothing costs pennies on the dollar to make because it's made in 3rd world countries and in china where labor is cheap but 90% of the costs of goods is not in production or manufacturing but in shipping. cloth is made in one country, shipped on boat to another where it is dyed, shipped to naother where it is assembled and then shipped to america where it is ready to be sold. 3. aside from shipping costs the companies also spend a large chunk on advertising. the reason companies pay so little to employees is because they spend tons advertising. But even then the costs to make the clothing and advertise and run a business are small and the mark up on clothing is huge. Profits abound and they do it because people will pay for it because everyone is so image conscious, especially teens who want to fit in witht heir peers.

I don't know why people have such a hard on for Hollister, what's worse you're representing an absolute shithole town that's really only known for their bike week. I (being from California) remember going to college in Wisconsin seeing people wearing Hollister clothes. Hollister, CA maybe with a surfboard and a flower. I'm like "You gotta be kidding me, Hollister really?" Hollister sucks.
