  • I think that personality traits are learned. Early on, children learn what it takes for them to survive in whatever environment they are brought up in, and they adopt those qualities, integrating them into their personalities. They do what it takes for them to survive and then to thrive. Therefore things like birth order, sex of the child, demeanor and style of parenting, exposure to diversity, level of support from key groups and individuals all play a role in the development of personality. All that said, there is also a genetic component which determines things like levels of certain enzymes and chemical balances in the body and brain. Those also have an impact on what it may take for a particular individual to survive and thrive, so the genetic component also plays a part in the development of a personality.
