Why are the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL not called the North Carolina Hurricanes when they play out of Raleigh?

Just like the dallas cowboys. The team resides in arlington which is between Dallas and Fort Worth but yet they are called dallas.

Aesthetics, I would guess. It just looks and sounds better to call them simply, the Carolina Huricanes. Also, it might be to try to appeal to South Carolina hockey fans (if they exist...) by giving them a team to cheer for too.

My first thought is because people here in the south have always just refered to North Carolina as "Carolina"...as in the Carolina Panthers (football) who are also in North Carolina. My second thought is because South Carolina doesn't have any teams to challenge it the taking of "Carolina" for a team name...well, they do have the Gamecocks ;)
