My 1969 Dodge Charger 383 high performance with high lift cam starts good and idles good, but when you shift into reverse or drive it wants to stall. What could be wrong?

    When high lift cams are introduced more power is perhaps the reward but the sacrifice is rough idle and a need for a higher idle. You can set the idle higher, however the down side of that is the clunk when you put it gear and and even greater clunk going from drive to reverse or vice versa. The real solution to the problem is a torque converter that engages at a higher rpm. Also the torqueflight transmissions are notorius for breaking rear bands. A high idle without the right torque converter will almost be certain death to a rear band in time. Dale........

    It sounds like your idle is set too low, high performance engines should idle a bit higher than normal cars.

    sounds like a 2000 stall converter would help. with a big cam the engine needs more air/fuel to run thats why race engines tend to run better at about 1100 to 1250 idle RPM
