  • The next time you look in the mirror, you will discover that the human body is actually divided right down the middle. the left side, in most cases, is the exact duplicate of the right side. Take your finger and gently press on the front of your nose. you will feel a straight up and down line. this is the equator, or dividing line of the human body. Now, with that said, the lord made humans with two of everything, except in sexuality and a brain. if you think about it, having two nostrils, is better than one. if a cold has one side stuffed, you can breath through the other. The human body is truly a marvel.
  • Firstly, that is like asking "Why do we only have two legs when we only have one body?" :P The nose is the name we give to our two nostrils and surrounding tissue... Though to answer your question: We have two eyes, each seeing slightly different images to give us depth-perception. We have two ears, each hearing sounds at different times to give us a sense of direction. We have two nostrils, each smelling slightly different smells: Inside each nostril is an area of tissue which expands and shrinks, each nostril cycles this expansion & shrinkage over time (approx. an hour). When the tissue is expanded, it slows the passage of air over the olfactory cells (the smelling things :P), so that chemicals which dissolve slowly have more time to be detected (smelt) by these cells. While in the other nostril, the passage of air is faster, so that the quickly dissolving chemicals are detected more easily. ^ This means that we have two nostrils, because each takes in air at different speeds, to give a broader, more accurate sense of smell ;)
  • its better to have 2 nostril than 1 nostril and 2 nose O.o or 2 nose and each one has a nostril :p surely ul look like an alien..
  • i beleive its because each nostril has different senses and when combined they create one that is familar.
  • thats how go made us
  • The body alters the breathing from one nostril to the other. You can notice that when you put your hand up to your nose. When both nostrils are inhaling at the same rate it is only for a short period of time.
  • just in case you get a marble stuck up one
  • Because two nostrils are cooler than one!
  • I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but I know that I am able to keep breathing when I pick my nose. Once I tried to use both hands and passed out. Thank goodness one finger was dislodged when I fell. Hope this is helpful. Vladymir
  • in case one gets clogged.
  • I suspect it's a remnant of our animal backgrounds, where two nostrils would allow you to detect the source of a scent better than one nostril would, just as two eyes gives us a better sense of vision in terms of depth and perspective, and two ears also allows us to determine the source of a sound by the slight difference in the air reaching our two ear drums at different times.
