  • Most newer vehicles manufactured by GM come equipped with platinum plugs. They are advertised to last 100,000 miles. Theoretically, they don't need to be changed until they stop working. However, the old rule of thumb was every 30,000 miles. And then it depends on what type/brand you use. 20 years ago, all spark plugs were the same, and 30k was the norm. A normal set of plugs will cost between $2 and $4 each. Some platinum plugs can be as high as $10 each. It all works out the same though. Platinum costs 3x more, but lasts 3x longer. The question is,.....How valuable is your time? Do you wanna change them 3 times as often? If you are paying to have it done, the labor is the same no matter what plug the mechanic uses. I'd suggest going platinum if you can afford it.
