It's your special day, and it should be any way you want it. If you and your father are close, then tell him you want to walk down the aisle yourself, or have someone else walk you down, but you want him seated with your mother in a place of honor and want him to "Give you away". (or whatever you decide you want him to do). If you're not close, then there's no need to explain it to him. Just calmly say, "I've chosen Jim to walk down the aisle with me." No explanation needed. My sister (maid of honor) walked with me, then my dad gave me away.

I don't think it's wrong. I'm sure you have your reasons. My father didn't walk me down the isle. I didn't want to chose between(or risk offending) either my birth father or my Dad (who's been there for me through my life). So I asked my brother instead, and everybody understood.
