  • AVI is usually noted as being both a better quality and lower file size format.
  • completely irrelevant question! AVI like MP4, WMV, mks an other formats are just envelopes for the content. The quality on the content is given by the performance of the codec that encodes the content. You would always be able to find an avi file that is poor compared to mpg or an avi file that is far better than a MPG file. The correct question is : which codec is better for video, and on what type of devices, since better performance tends to come at a high CPU utilisation.
  • Depends on lots of factors size, quality, playback etc. If you're just after a quick youtube video then most phones and cameras will use avi as it's fairly average in 320x320 quality and it's not too bad insize usually under a few MB for a few minutes. MPG is better at bigger resolutions and the pictures qulaity is better but quite often it's a bigger file. One common trick most programs use in converting a mpg to avi is reducing the fps so the qulaity is reduced as well as the size.
