Don't let the possibility of getting hurt keep you from trying to achieve what you want in life. You can either take a chance and risk getting hurt, or not take a chance and risk (and therefore change) nothing. It's simple, but not easy, as they say. Maybe try to start small by getting out of your comfort zone occasionally and do things that are just a bit new and uncomfortable. These might help you build upon small successes to lead to bigger and bigger goals.

Know that life is about perception. If you feel that you will never be good enough for anyone, that's what will happen. If you instead think the opposite, then, that will happen too. Your perceptions create your reality.

Darth Continent hit the nail on the head right there. If you're miserable now, as it sounds like you may be, why not try and expand a bit, slowly at first, out of your comfort zone. It can't be any worse out there than it is where you are now, can it be? I used to be a lot like it sounds that you are, scared to go beyond what I was comfortable with, afraid of being hurt. What I found was that I was hurting myself by being like that anyway, so I slowly worked my way out, and I'm a lot happier for it. It's not easy, I'll admit, but it's far from impossible.

You can't let the possibility of getting hurt stop life in its tracks. We all go through it and we all survive. That is a part of life...a learning curve, if you will.
