FD&C Yellow #5 / E102 is a yellow azo dye known as tartrazine. It is a synthetic compound. Information on the chemical structure of azo compounds can be found in Wikepedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azo_compound).

These names refer to individual chemicals, not mixtures of ingredients. The formulas for the three chemicals are shown below (images taken from http://sci-toys.com/ingredients/red_40.html ). As for the processes used to make them, trust me, you don't want to know. Organic syntheses are difficult enough to read for small molecules. For these, the explanation would go on forever.

i am confused.. because even gelatin is a compound.. but its made from the extraction of bones and skin of animals.. so how does that clarify your statement about it just being a compound and has nothing to do with extracts from an animal(pig)??? i do not understand.

It comes from coal tar.

Yellow dye #5 is not made of pig or pork by-products. Most dyes are either man-made or from plants. Specifically Yellow Dye #5 is made of Tratazine. Look it up on Wikipedia.com
