To be honest, I think you shouldn't even try to make your own wicks. Buy fireworks with wicks.

a good way is to soak a piece of paper or toilet paper in WD40 its a lubricant or PAM which are both flammable and let the paper dry, twist the paper before or after so it is the right size. but there are no sparks like the commercial ones but it will burn at the right speed for you to get the heck out of the way before that thing blows.
