There's a simple difference between a fool's trying, trying, trying in a stubborn way, and a wise man's realization of when it is the time to stop and change attitude ^_^ Also, there's still the problem of personal beliefs and code of conduct. It may be that those "others" which you would have to "join" have a radically different approach than you, for example, some people have gladly joined fascism, while others preferred to die than join. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to determine the best course of action for themselves depending on the situation.
