Well, there's no real reason why the concept couldn't be adapted to long range camouflage. It wouldn't be totally invisible, but it could obscure the object somewhat... Good thinking.

I think you have the right basic idea, which is to bend light around something to make it invisible. There's been some recent work in this area, actually, that suggests that it might well be possible to make a "cloaking device". This device would be made of a so-called "meta-materials" which have property of a negative index of refraction. meta-materials that have a negative index of refraction have already been demonstrated at microwave frequencies, but light frequencies are much shorter, and are therefore it's much harder to construct a material that works for light.
