On April 18, 1981, Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Redwings of the International League met in the longest professional baseball game ever played. The game continued into the wee hours on April 19 being suspended. It was finally completed on June 23. The game took 33 innings to complete and lasted 8 hours 25 minutes. Pawtucket won 3 - 2. There were a total of 39 hits. 14 pitchers appeared in the game throwing more than 800 pitches. 160 baseballs were used by the time the game ended. Dallas Williams, center fielder for Rochester, went 0 for 13 and saw his batting average drop 15 points because of that one game. That's not a bad day at the plate, that's a bad week at the plate. Ripken, who played third base for Rochester, was 2 for 13. There is an excellent story about the game at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/17/AR2006041701586.html
