It wouldn't. But if it somehow did, the moon would stop orbiting and shoot off into space or into the Sun.

The moon would continue on whatever course it was on until acted upon by an outside force. My guess is that without the Earth's gravity to hold it in orbit it would end up eventually colliding with the sun.

we would be toast

No more Luna. No more tides. Life would change, drastically.
-
Life as we know it would cease to exist.
-
there would be very bad flooding and the we would not be here much longer after that unless some of ous somehow find a new way to live. there would only be a few to start the population all over again

See you later moon. No more tides, possible changes in oceans currents thereby changing local environments - sometimes drastically, VERY dark nights (New moon darkness) and a lot less romantic moments.

1. The moon would continue in a straight line from the point in which the gravity stopped, leaving the Earth's orbit. 2. The ocean and lake tides would reduce dramatically. The sun would allow for "mini-tides", but not enough to keep many waters from becoming stagnant. This would also result in the death of many types of sea life. Surfing would be an extinct sport, but California's erosion would slow down. 4. Night would be very dark and we would loose sight of many things in space. 5. Certains types of plant life would either adapt or become extinct. 6. It's not certain if wind movement would be affected. Meteoroligsts are split on whether wind speeds would increase, decrease, or be unchanging. 7. Songs with the word "moon" in them would no longer receive radio play.

The orbital speed of the moon is 1.023 km/s, or 2288MPH. Without the gravitational pull of the earth the moon would continue in a straight line perpendicularly away from the earth at that speed instead of its orbit around the earth. The change on earth would be gradual since the moon is moving away at more or less the same speed it normally moves away from a given side of the earth. The biggest changes would include dramatically greater darkness at night and the loss of tidal changes. Tides would no longer rise and fall. The weather would also become calmer as gravitational force no longer influences global motion of atmosphere. With the loss of tides, a number of species that depend upon the tides could be expected to die, including clams and other sand-dwelling creatures.
