There's a type of book-binding where curved notches are cut out of page edges, especially for chapter or section headings. It's quite an old-fashioned technique and is often used with gilt page edging. Any idea what it's called?

I know what you're referring to, and my very good list of book binding terms doesn't list it: http://www.alibris.com/glossary/glossary-books The edge where the groove is, is called a "fore-edge" or a "front-edge" I thought maybe it was a "french groove", but I remain unconvinced.
