I have a 351w in a kit car, there is backfiring at idle and when some power is put to it. The timing is fine, what else could it be?

I would double check the firing order to make sure you have the plug wires correct. Maybe also check your spark at each cylinder to make sure it is good and that you do not have a cylinder that in missing. Backfire is caused by unburnt fuel in the exhaust. Perhaps you are running it a bit rich?
