The purpose of LINUX is to over throw the mighty empire of comercialism that is Microsoft, by slowly and inefficiently trying to take over the OS market. The features of LINUX include; it not being made by Microsoft. The functions of LINUX mainly include; Boot up, Shut down and log in.

mm, that doctor guy is a little misguided... or just ignorant :) if you want a brief history, purpose and examples: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux Get the real facts, and research for non-biased opinions. I myself am biased towards Linux, and have been using it for several years now :) I carry around a USB thumbdrive that I can boot to linux on for those computers that haven't upgraded yet ;) :P

Function is relative to ones awareness of the world that surrounds them without bias. Linux is feature rich but it is extremely customizable. No one could explain all the features in this forum. I don’t think anyone can tell you which OS is better, before knowing what your needs are, and then you have to take that with a grain of salt as well. I have been in the industry for all most 15 years and in my opinion I use the different OS's for different things. For example: Exchange server – Windows Web Server – Linux Database (Oracle) – Solaris Desktop – Windows File Share – Windows & Linux Software Firewall - Linux Backup Server - Solaris Storage Management - Linux Graphic Design - MAC VMware - Linux Monitoring Server - Linux If you haven't used UNIX or Linux you may think differently.
