The timing is set at 0 degrees. From the passenger side, look under the plastic cowling at the top of the fire wall. You need to find the brown/orange wire. Dis-connect it, set timing, and re-connect the wire.

The timing on a 1997 Chevy v8 engine is controlled by the computer. If the distributor needs to be removed it needs to be set using a scan tool. Start the engine and allow it to warm up. Install the scan tool and looking at engine data monitor the value of cam retard offset. Adjust the distributor untill the value is 0 +/- 2 Degrees.
